Newborn Gosling Survives Jump Off Portland I-5 Bridge into Willamette River
A Canada goose gosling survived a nearly 65-foot (20 meter) jump from a highway overpass directly into the Willamette River in Portland.
Although the fall from the height of a six-story building looked fatal, the fluffy gosling survived thanks to its extremely low body weight of around 1.4 oz (40 grams) and aerodynamic drag, which limited its terminal velocity to roughly 20 mph (30 kph).
The footage, captured by Melissa Riordan on the Eastbank Esplanade walkway, reveals a remarkable physics phenomenon – upon hitting the water, the gosling behaved almost like a soft ball because its bones are still highly flexible.
