Diver Captures Rare Footage of Great White Shark near Sicily
Divers removing abandoned fishing nets southwest of Sicily encountered a great white shark around 130 feet (40 meters) below the surface. They managed to capture the encounter on video, and experts believe it could be the first underwater footage of a great white shark ever recorded in the Mediterranean Sea.
The shark circled the group for a short time before approaching the divers several times. According to those involved, the animal appeared curious and calm, showing no signs of aggression. Adult males of this species can grow up to 13 feet (4 meters) long and weigh as much as 2,200 lbs (1,000 kilograms).
Marine biologists described the encounter as exceptionally rare and scientifically valuable. Experts believe the shark was an adult male spotted several miles offshore between Sicily and Tunisia, meaning there is no reason for concern among beachgoers.
