Bison Launches Older Tourist High Into the Air in Yellowstone

A dramatic bison attack at Yellowstone National Park in the United States has gone viral, with the video already surpassing 100 million views online.

The massive bull charged an elderly tourist, striking him with its horns and throwing him more than two meters (over 6 feet) into the air in front of his grandson.

The incident occurred at Bridge Bay Campground in Wyoming. According to initial reports, the elderly man was walking with his grandson when an agitated bison approached them, despite the pair attempting to stay behind trees.

Bison catapulted the tourist into the air

Witnesses said the bull had already been behaving aggressively and displaying strong territorial instincts. It is believed the ongoing mating season may have contributed to the animal's agitation, as male bison are often much more aggressive during this period.

After a pickup truck drove past, the bison first charged toward the vehicle before suddenly turning its attention to the two hikers.

The grandson managed to escape, but the elderly man was caught by the charging animal, which struck him with tremendous force and launched him high into the air. He landed hard on the ground and remained seriously injured.

A photographer helped save his life

The attack was filmed by photographer Mike MacLeod, who was documenting the scene. When he realized the bison might trample the injured man, he stopped filming, ran toward the animal, and shouted loudly in an attempt to distract it.

His quick reaction gave other visitors enough time to reach the injured tourist and provide assistance.

Emergency responders later transported the man to a hospital. Reports indicate he suffered serious injuries, primarily to his hip and leg.

You cannot outrun a bison

Although bison are herbivores, they are among the most dangerous animals in Yellowstone, especially when they feel threatened or are protecting their territory.

Park officials continually remind visitors to stay at least 25 meters (82 feet) away from bison. Adult bulls can weigh nearly one ton and are capable of running at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), making them much faster than most people expect.
