During his visit to the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Istanbul, Pope Leo XIV spotted a sick child in a wheelchair among the faithful. He approached him and offered a blessing - a moment that has touched Catholics around the world.

Who is Pope Leo XIV?


Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, is the current leader of the Catholic Church, elected on May 8, 2025. He was born in 1955 in Chicago, USA, and joined the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977. Over the years he served as a missionary, theologian, professor, and bishop. Before his election as pope, he held the position of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, where he played a key role in bishop appointments and in restructuring Church governance.

Leo XIV is known as a calm and thoughtful leader who advocates for open dialogue while remaining committed to traditional Church teachings. He spent many years working pastorally in Peru, earning a reputation as a unifying figure capable of resolving conflicts and bringing communities together.

Pope blessed a child in a wheelchair


During his first apostolic visit to Turkey, Pope Leo XIV met with bishops, priests, and deacons at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, also known as Saint Esprit Cathedral. He greeted many of the faithful, and an emotional moment unfolded when he encountered the sick child.

During the visit on November 28, 2025, the pope noticed the young boy in a wheelchair and approached him to give a blessing. The emotional video has since moved believers all over the world.
