The rescue took place on March 21, when temperatures in the Ukrainian capital remained well below freezing, and the river was covered by a dangerous layer of thin ice.
Volodymyr noticed the dog had broken through the ice and was struggling in vain to return to shore. Knowing that minutes were numbered, he quickly stripped down and swam into the river, where the panicked animal could have easily pulled him under the surface.
A Battle Against Minutes and the Dnieper's Icy Grip
The footage reveals the entire rescue process, showing Volodymyr slowly carving a path through the ice sheets. By the time he reached the dog, it was already completely exhausted and on the brink of death due to hypothermia.
Volodymyr pulled the dog toward his body with his arms, then pushed it ahead of him all the way to the shore. Every wrong move could have meant both ending up under the ice, and the rescuer risked his life even though he did not know the dog.
A Symbol of Humanity: More Than Just a Viral Video
The rescue in Kyiv became more than just a global internet phenomenon with over 1.5 million views; it serves as a powerful symbol of humanity during a time when the region is exposed to constant trials.
Volodymyr received not only the gratitude of thousands of strangers on YouTube but also official praise from local authorities for his actions.
Experts point out that the greatest danger was the temperature shock upon contact with the icy water, which can cause immediate cardiac arrest. Once he finally brought the dog to safety, he dried it with a towel, while the animal could barely stand on its feet from the shock.
