Mysterious Giant Sea Worm Found By Divers Near New Zealand

Pyrosomes are free-floating colonial tunicates that live usually in the upper layers of the open ocean in warm seas, although some may be found at greater depths. Pyrosomes are cylindrical or cone-shaped colonies made up of hundreds to thousands of individuals, known as zooids.

Colonies range in size from less than one centimeter to several metres in length. They are commonly called "sea pickles" or "sea worms".

National Geographic has posted a video on the Web these days, in which divers encountered a very giant sea "worm" near New Zealand. It measured 8 meters in length, and it impressed many with his image.

Even at this "worm", thousands of zooids colonize it, which together form the image of a worm.

They are feeding by filtering water, while catching plankton. Such sea "worms" may be very small, but there are also as big as the worm in the video before you.
