Rare Video From 1954 Shows Us Dramatic Niagara Falls Collapse

On July 24, 1954, a huge section of Prospect Point observation area at the brink of the American Falls. The section of rock that collapsed was in a pie shape, sending an estimated 185,000 tons of rock thundering into the Niagara River Gorge.

Witnesses said the view from the base of the American Falls has been damaged. No indication as to whether the elevator to the Maid of the Mist at the base of the American Falls would be re-opened.

This was the worst rock fall at Prospect Point since January 17th 1931 when a huge section of the American Falls tumbled into the gorge.

When the first rock on the Niagara Falls fell that day, a cameraman from Movietone also went to the scene. At first, he did not witness any special features on his arrival, but then his waiting paid off.

On the camera, he captured a dramatic video clip when about 185,000 tons of stones fell into the water.

The video was uploaded to the web already in 2015, but it is now going viral on the Internet. Take a look at how the moment looked like in 1954, when part of the area to observe this natural beauty in Niagara Falls fell into the water.

I remember as a 14 year old seeing this on the 'new' TV news. It was fascinating and I am delighted to see it has been saved so I can watch it as an 80 year old...Thanks!
