Six People Killed In Deadly Ice Avalanche In Dolomites, Italy

On the highest peak in Italy's Dolomites, part of a glacier broke off yesterday afternoon, triggering an avalanche.

According to the latest official data, six people lost their lives, at least nine people were injured.

Rescuers told the media that 15 people were trying to conquer the highest peak of the Dolomites, Marmolada, when the top of the glacier broke off. A large-scale avalanche of ice, stones and snow occurred on their way.

Terrifying footage of an avalanche in the Dolomites:

The avalanche dragged many climbers behind and according to the latest information, at least six people died, nine were injured, two of them seriously. With the help of a helicopter, 18 more people were evacuated from the area. They are looking for survivors with a helicopter, rescue dogs are also helping at the rescue operation.

Back on Saturday, a temperature record of 10 °Celsius (50 °F) was measured on the 3,343-meter-high (10,967 ft) Marmolada peak. It is the melting that is most likely the cause of the break-off of part of the glacier, which triggered the large-scale landslide.
