This World's Lightest Solid Has Been Used In Numerous Mars Missions

Aerogel is a hard substance similar to a gel in which the liquid component is replaced by gas. What emerges is a solid with very low density, which has several extraordinary abilities, the most important of which is its effectiveness as an insulator.

Due to its semi-transparent nature, it was also called frozen smoke, solid smoke, solid air, solid cloud or blue smoke.

Aerogel was first produced by Steven Kistler in 1931 after a bet with Charles Learned, who competed for who could replace the liquid in a jar of jelly with gas without causing a shrinkage.

This time, the the man behind Veritasium channel tested properties of silicon aerogel in the video, and impressed many on the web with an impression. The video has already collected 3 million views in less than a day.

See how solid material with the lowest density in the world looks and what extraordinary features it has!
