Terrifying CCTV Footage Shows Buildings Collapsing During Venezuela Earthquake

Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, leaving widespread devastation across the country.

A heartbreaking video from the city of Caraballeda went viral yesterday, revealing the destruction caused by the second and stronger earthquake. People scrambled to safety as high-rise buildings collapsed before their eyes.

The surveillance footage captures the terrifying moments experienced by residents of the coastal city of Caraballeda in Venezuela's La Guaira state. The nearby state capital, also named La Guaira, with a population of around 25,000, was among the hardest-hit areas, while neighboring Caraballeda is home to approximately 53,000 people.

People knocked to the ground as buildings collapsed

A security camera in Caraballeda, located north of the capital Caracas, recorded the moment the devastating earthquake struck. As the ground began shaking violently, people rushed out of a local bowling center in an attempt to reach safety.

The powerful tremors threw many of them to the ground while parked vehicles bounced violently. Across the street, they witnessed an even more horrifying scene as several apartment buildings began collapsing in front of them.

Caraballeda and the neighboring city of La Guaira suffered some of the worst structural damage caused by the earthquakes. Significant destruction was also reported throughout the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

Video captures the strongest earthquake

The surveillance footage, which spread rapidly online yesterday, clearly shows the sequence of events during the twin earthquakes that devastated Venezuela's northern coastline.

According to official data, the first earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.2, struck just before 6:05 p.m. local time. Although it caused intense shaking, the most catastrophic damage occurred during the second earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.5, which struck just 39 seconds later. Scientists estimate that the second quake released roughly three times more energy than the first.

The video below captures the exact moment the second earthquake hit Caraballeda, resulting in one of the worst natural disasters in Venezuela's history.

The death toll is expected to rise further

According to the latest official figures, at least 1,719 people have lost their lives and more than 5,000 have been injured. Authorities report that around 80,000 people were initially listed as missing, with more than 15,000 since located.

Based on data collected through missing-person reporting platforms established after the disaster, approximately 60,000 people remain unaccounted for. Officials warn that the final death toll could ultimately climb into the tens of thousands.
