New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo After Years of Research

Scientists have officially described a new species of black monkey, Colobus congoensis, discovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Locally known as Likweli, it is one of only five new African monkey species identified in the past 75 years.

These small monkeys weigh around seven kilograms and are distinguished by their silky black fur, pale lips, and striking cream-orange hair surrounding their faces. They also lack thumbs, making them one of the rare thumb-less monkey species.

Likweli monkeys live high in the rainforest canopy, feeding on leaves and other vegetation while playing an important role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration. They are also known for their unique, powerful calls that resemble a mix of deep booming and belching sounds.

Researchers warn that the newly identified species is already under serious threat from hunting and habitat loss, and they recommend listing it as an endangered species.
