This Is A Shocking Moment When Motorway Bridge Collapsed In Genoa, Italy
In the northern Italy, a part of the Morandi motorway viaduct collapsed yesterday in Genoa during a heavy rainfall, with at least 26 people losing their lives. There is also a child among victims, and some media report there is at least 35 fatalities.
Many people are still trapped under debris, and rescue took place whole night.
In Genoa, on the A10 motorway, about 100 meters highway, known as Morandi, collapsed around 12 am during heavy rains. At the time of the accident, there were about 30 cars and trucks on the highway, which then fell around 30 meters deep. Many were trapped in completely destroyed cars.
At the site of the accident there are still over 200 firefighters, police officers and rescuers. They are still looking for missing people with a help of rescue dogs, as well as a special group of firefighters, specializing in rescue in urban disasters.
The Viaduct crashed into an industrial area, for which the Italian media say that it is also densely populated. Many buildings underneath the motorway were damaged by the rubble of concrete and iron. The reason for the crash is still unknown, although there are many rumors that the fault was a structural error. Some eyewitnesses told the media that just before the accident, they saw how the lightning hit the viaduct.
Since 2001, yesterday's accident in Italy is the most lethal accident in Europe. In the Portuguese city of Castelo de Paiva, the bridge collapsed in 2001, and a bus and three cars fell into the river. In this accident, 58 people lost their lives.
