The World's Oldest Dog Bobi Dies At Age 31

The oldest dog in the world, who also officially holds the world record for dog years, died in Portugal these days.

31-year-old Bobi died on Saturday in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where he had lived all his life with the Costa family.

The sad news was announced online by his veterinarian, Karen Becker, who pointed out that his 11,478 days on Earth would never be enough for those who loved him very much.

Meet Bobi, the oldest dog in the world:

Bobi left for the rainbow at the record age of 31 years and 165 days. According to an informative calculation in our years, Bobi would have lived as much as 217 years as a human being. His age was also confirmed in the official registry of the Portuguese Federation of Veterinarians.

Guinness World Records
Bobi was really lucky right after the birth - he was born with three more puppies, but the owners had all the puppies euthanized due to too many animals. Bobi was inadvertently forgotten - he remained hidden among a pile of wood, and his life was saved by children who found him later. A boy named Leonel was eight years old, and he and his brothers secretly took care of Bobi. When the dog was discovered by the boys' parents, it was already too late to euthanize him. Bobi became part of the family.

His owner, Leonel, said that it was the peaceful environment that most likely contributed to Bobi's long life - he was never chained, moving freely on the fenced property. Bobi was a purebred The Rafeiro do Alentejo, which is considered a shepherd dog, and the aforementioned breed has an average lifespan of between 12 and 14 years.
