Turkey Got Hit By A Massive Earthquake, Destroying More Than 1,700 Buildings
A strong 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria in the early hours of the morning today, followed by more aftershocks.
The strongest was recorded today at 11:25 a.m. EST with a magnitude of 7.5 - the latest official death toll has risen to 1,600.
The main earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers, was followed by more than 50 aftershocks. Authorities rightly fear that the death toll will rise sharply, as more than 1,700 buildings have collapsed in Turkey alone.
Many people are still trapped under the rubble, and rescue efforts are also being made difficult by extremely low temperatures. Authorities are urging residents to leave buildings despite the cold, as there is a high risk of devastating aftershocks.
A state of emergency has been declared in the wider area of southeastern Turkey and Syria, and numerous rescue teams from abroad are on the way. Some buildings are on the verge of destruction, which makes the work of rescuers even more difficult and very dangerous during the aftershocks.
